‘Doris,’ Howard says solemnly as we check the talent show list together at the end of the day. ‘This poster doesn’t make you look very popular.’

‘I know. It makes me look completely friendless,’ I say.

‘I’ve got an extra pebble in my pocket if you want one?’ he of fers.

‘No, thanks.’ I’d smile at him but that makes my nose hurt even more. I knew I should have left the ice pack on for longer.

There must be someone I can team up with. I scan the list. It’s crammed from top to bottom with names and acts, and I know if I don’t put my name back up there (without a big fat line through it), Miss Nankervis will come after me with another one of her I’m-here-if-you-need-me speeches.

I think back to what she said earlier. She’s wrong. Well, half wrong. I don’t have stage fright. I may not be a great performer – I know I can dance a bit, but not like Dad and Howard, and I can kind of sing, but nowhere near as well as Mum – but actually getting up on stage isn’t the dif ficult part. It’s never felt like that big a deal. Nope, it definitely isn’t the stage I’m afraid of.

It’s the audience that terrifies me.

Or more specifically, the people in the audience.

And even more specifically, the people in the audience who look at you like you’re a total and utter weirdo. Because Warrenville Primary seems to be full of people who are more than happy to judge you like that. And I’m not the only weirdo around here who has felt it.

My eyes have reached the bottom of the list.
